SUMMARY OF DISCOURSES

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 1

The discourse began with a beautiful recitation of some couplets from the Qaseedah Burdah by the Mu’adhin of Musjid Us Saliheen, Sheikh Yahya. The people really enjoy Sheikh Yahya’s rendition of the Qaseedah Burdah. Mufti Saheb began his discourse by mentioning the background of the composer of the Qaseedah Burdah, Allâmah Busâyri Rahmatullah Alayh.

Allâmah Busâyri Rahmatullah Alayh hailed from Egypt.  He was employed by the government. He associated with high profile people and had all the comforts and luxuries of Life. However, he did not have peace (Sukoon). On this, Mufti Saheb explained the difference between the means of peace and peace itself. He stated when one turns to Allalh, Allah will grant one peace. The various means of peace may not necessarily give one peace.

Imam Busayri Rahmatullah Alayh identified a spiritual guide. This was a turning point. He then treaded the path of Tazkiyah.

Allâmah Busâyri always wished to have the Ziyaarat of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam in his dream and wrote numerous poems in praises of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam When he was old and afflicted with a stroke, Allamâh Busâyri Rahmatullah Alayh was blessed with the Ziyarah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam in which he presented some couplets in the praises of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was extremely pleased with this poetry and presented Allâmah Busâyri with a shawl. Hence, the name of the poem, Poems of the Shawl.

The love of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is integral in the life of a believer. A person’s imân is not complete until the love of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is more than the love of anyone else in your life.

Mufti Saheb mentioned some incidents showing the love the Sahabah had for Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam and their acts of love which demonstrated their extreme love for Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

Love has the potential to create a revolution in the life of a person. A person observes the beloved and wishes to emulate every action of the beloved.

Mufti Saheb mentioned the story of Majnoon and Layla and the impact love can have in one’s life.

Mufti Saheb explained the introduction of the poems. There are two role players. One is an Ashiq (Lover) of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam and the other is an observer of the Ashiq. The observer observes the reaction of the Ashiq-e-Rasool. Whenever there is a slight reference to Madinah Shareef, or the neighbourhood of Madinah Shareef, or even the mountains of Madinah Shareef, the Ashiq-e-Rasool gets emotional and his ‘eyes bleed tears’. That is an expression of a heart bleeding with love.

Mufti Saheb then presented amazing incidents of the Sahabahs love for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

“A great invaluable discourse to to instill the love of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam and to learn how to fall in love with our beloved Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.”

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 2

The Ishq (Extreme Love for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)

The first Chapter consists of 24 poems. There are two role players in these poems.

1) The Aashiq – Lover.

2) The observer of the lover.

In the first 14 poems, the observer is amazed at the extra ordinary love of the Aashiq. He is soaked in the love of his beloved. He only wants to see the face of his beloved, he only wishes to hear the beloved and he only wishes to hear the beloved talk. The observer observes that when there is any mention of Madinah Shareef or the areas around Madinah Shareef, the lover becomes emotional. His eyes flow with tears mixed with blood. Actually, his heart bleeds with love. The observer has an idea that the lover is in love with an extraordinary person, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. The lover becomes emotional when he feels a breeze. He attributes the breeze to the breeze of Madinah Shareef.

A lover looks for any excuse to be linked with the beloved. The link of a link is a link. The observer then addresses the Aashiq-e-Rasool “How can you conceal your love? Your flowing tears and aching heart is clear testament of your love. Your pale face with two red lines of blood is ample proof of your love. Tell us of your love.”

The Aashiq-e-Rasool then breaks his silence and tells how the mere thought of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has broken his sleep and kept him awake. The Aashiq-e-Rasool says if anyone advises him against this love, he will simply not listen. Even his grey hair is advising him to take it easy in this love. He responds that he’d rather get old and sick due to extreme love of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam and die with such love.

Mufti Saheb then mentioned few examples of Ishq of the Sahabah had for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. How a Sahabi was prepared to give his life for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. How a Sahabi never parted with what Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam gave him. How a tree cried upon parting from Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

Finally, Mufti Saheb advised that real lovers convert emotion into actions and adherence to the Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. A real follower imitates his beloved.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 3

The Nafs: A Silent Enemy From Within Ourselves

Allamah Busâyri Rahimahullah commences this Chapter by painting a picture of an old and feeble man who has wrinkles on his face, his eyes sunken, he cannot hear and talk properly and he has no energy in his body. He is aware now that his lifespan is short and will die any time. However, he is struggling to fight his Nafs.

He states his Nafs is like a wild, rebellious horse. He searches desperately for a spiritual guide to control his Nafs before he leaves this World.

When he submits to a spiritual guide and confides in him, he gives him just one advice. Never feed your Nafs with sins. The spsiritual guide then presents three characteristics of the Nafs.

1) The Nafs is like a breastfeeding child.

2) The Nafs is a fraudster.

3) The Nafs is like a grazing animal

Mufti Saheb then elaborated on the different types of Nafs:

1) Nafs e Ammârah

2) Nafs e Lawwâmah

3) Nafs e Mutma’innah

He advised just as we have different stages in life, childhood, youth and old age, we should not get stuck on Nafs e Ammârah, we should move on until we reach Nafs e Lawwâmah and finally, Nafs e Mutma’innah.

He concluded with a Du’aa taught to us by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam against our Nafs.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 4

Mufti Saheb commenced his weekly discourse on the Qaseedah Burdah by mentioning the harms of satisfying ones Nafs and becoming enslaved to ones desires.

He resumed this week’s Majlis by mentioning the three advices given to Imam Busâyri Rahimahullah by his spiritual guide:

1) Your eyes that have been fed with Haraam all your life, now cry tears of regret over your sins with those eyes.

2) Go against your Nafs and go against the Shaitaan. Always suspect the Nafs, even if it gives sincere advice.

3) Never trust the Nafs, whether it comes as a disputant or a judge.

Mufti Saheb then elaborated on the Fitna of the eyes and Zina. He stated when a person looks at the opposite gender, that vision goes to the brain. The brain directs that vision to the heart and from there, to all the limbs.

Now the ear wants to hear what the eyes have seen, the mouth wants to talk to what the eyes have seen. The hands and feet want to go to and touch what the eyes has seen. In order to avoid all that, put pressure on the eyes to control the gaze.

Mufti Saheb said that the lustful gaze is a poisonous arrow from Shaitaan. The arrow wounds the archer first. Mufti Saheb then stated if one sees a woman and maintains his chastity despite the pain of loving the woman, he dies as a Shaheed. He loves the pain for the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala.

Mufti Saheb stated if one does not control his gaze, he will never satisfy himself. Every person is different. Be content with your wife. This World is not for pursuing ones Nafs and desires.

Mufti Saheb explained how a millionaire lost all his wealth due to lustful glances and Zina. A person who controls his Nafs becomes a Mustajabut Da’waat (One who’s Du’aas are readily accepted).

Finally, Mufti Saheb advised and mentioned some Du’aas from the Hadith on controlling ones Nafs.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 5

Praises Of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

The first Chapter was on the Ishq (extreme love) for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

The second Chapter was on following ones Nafs.

Mufti Saheb stated that one cannot have the love for Rasululllah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam if he is intoxicated in his desires. He then said, one way to inculcate love for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is by understanding the lofty position of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, hence the Chapter: Praises of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Mufti Saheb commenced by describing the outer appearance of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

The beautiful and Mubarak face of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, his beautiful eyes, the extremely beautiful pupils with clear white eyes and a red vein of blood in the whiteness of the eyes. His moderate stature, his Mubarak hair etc.

The description itself is sufficient to fall in love with Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Allamah Busayri Rahimahullah then mentioned some qualities of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam In the 24 poems of the 3rd Chapter.

Mufti Saheb explained the poems then advises that love for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam should be translated into action by following the Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 6

Mufti Saheb commenced his discourse on the summarized version of the Third Chapter of the Qaseedah Burdah with the praises of Rasululah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. Mufti Saheb refered to Surah Alam Nashrah wherein Allah Ta’ala refers to the Mubarak chest of Rasulullah  Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, his back and his being. Finally, Allah Ta’ala says: We have elevated your Zikr (remembrance and popularity).

Mufti Saheb expounded on how Rasululah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is part of our Kalimah, part of our Azaan and Du’aas after the Azaan.

Mufti Saheb continued with explaining the reality of love. Love is natural. It has its demands and must be fulfilled. True love is to love someone without any personal motive. That is the love Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam had for us.

He explained the remaining poems of the 3rd Chapter and then elaborated on the last poem.

How fortunate is that person who touches and kisses the Rawde Aqdas of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

Mufti Saheb then encouraged on following the Sunnah. He referred to the Sunnah of tolerance to one’s wives with a thought-provoking incident.

Mufti Saheb mentioned the quality of extraordinary tolerance Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam had. He concluded by mentioning *4* things a person will be blessed with if he preserves the Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam:

1) The pious will love you.

2) Sinners will have awe in their hearts for you.

3) Allah will give you Barakah in your sustenance.

4) By practising on the Sunnah, Allah will keep you firm on the Deen.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 7

Maulid Al-Nabi

Mufti Saheb began his discourse by mentioning the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was the most important event that took place in this World.

Everything about the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam indicated hope and positivity. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was born in spring. In winter, everything dries up. In spring, everything blossoms.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was born at the break of dawn. At night, there is a feeling of hopelessness. At the break of dawn (Subah Saadiq) there is a feeling of life and hope. This was an indication of the darkness of Kufr will change to the light of Imaan.

The Poems of Qaseedah Burdah explain the various miracles before the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. There were many divine indications about the coming of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Furthermore, the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has given people the opportunity to witness the purity of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam by his coming into the World.

The Palace of Kisra was a solid structure of 14 pillars, it was over 100 metres high and it was built over a period of 90 years. The night before the birth of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, the 14 pillars of the palace all showed cracks. It was an indication that the days of Shirk were coming to an end and Tauheed was to begin.

Allamah Busayri referred to how Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam threw sand towards the enemies in the Battle of Badr. The sand/pebbles made Zikr in the blessed palms of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam like how Yunus Alayhis Salaam made Zikr in the belly of the fish.

A 1000 year old fire that was worshipped by and kindled by the Persians, suddenly came to an end. The Euphrates which was a major river in the region, suddenly dried up. The Shayateen were being pelted by the stars as they tried to break through the skies to get information.

Mufti Saheb concluded by mentioning that the person who makes Zikr is like a person who is alive and the person who doesn’t is like a dead person. The Zikr of Allah is the cure to one’s depression. You feel peace and contentment through it.

The Da’wah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Mufti Saheb makes mention of the 3 missions of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam and the methods of his Da’wah.

Mufti Saheb then advised that one should adopt a balanced attitude in serving Deen. Don’t be an extremist and don’t be negligent. Mufti Saheb referred to various miracles of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam during Da’wah.

The miracle of the tree, the miracle of the cloud, the miracle of the Moon, the miracle of the cave, the miracle of the touch of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam the miracle of the Du’aa of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam during drought.

Mufti Saheb concluded with an inspiring incident of a Sahabi, Zaahir Radhiyallahu Anh and his love for Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Finally, Mufti Saheb advised to practise on the Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

Mufti Saheb then quoted the following Hadith:

??? ??????? ? ???? ????? ??????? ???????????? ?????: ????? ??????? ????? ?????? ??????? ???????? ?????????: ???? ?????? ????????? ???????? ??? ???????? ???????? ???????? ??????????? ?????? ????????? ??????? ??????: ??? ??????? ?????? ????? ????? ???????? ??? ???????? ?????????? ?????: ??????????? ??? ??????? ???????

Translation: The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Whoever eats Halal and acts in accordance with the Sunnah, and the people are safe from his harm, he will enter Paradise.” So, a man said: “O Messenger of Allah! This is the case with many people today.” So, he said: “It shall be so in the generation after me.”

Finally, Mufti Saheb advised us to practise on the Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 9

The Glory Of The Qur’aan

Mufti Saheb commenced his discourse with reference to the previous discussion on miracles.

The prophets were given miracles according to the challenges of the time.

At the time of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, people used to compete with each other in poetry and eloquence. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was an Ummi (he didn’t know how to read and write) yet he began reciting such verses that superseded the most celebrated poetry of the time.

Mufti Saheb then explained that the Quraan is a living miracle of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

Mufti Saheb then referred to one poem of Allamah Busayri Rahimahullah.

“The verses of the Qur’aan are like the waves of the ocean in support of each other.

And greater than the beauty and value of the jewels of the ocean.”

On this, Mufti Saheb stated that there are 309,800 principle knowledges in the Qur’aan. The subsidiary knowledges emanating from that is different.

Mufti Saheb then mentioned that if someone wants true knowledge, he should hold on to the Qur’aan.

He then mentioned that the Qur’aan has three rights over us:

1) Have conviction that Quraan is from Allah. This is the meaning of ‘Laa-Rayba-Feeh’

2) To make Tilawat of the Qur’aan e Kareem.

Mufti Saheb referred to some Ahadith on this.

3) Understand the meaning of the Qur’aan.

Mufti Saheb then concluded by stating that the Ummah can become powerful and dynamic once again if they understand and practise on the Qur’aan.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 10

The 7th Chapter is titled “The Me’raj’’. This refers to the physical ascension of Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)” towards the skies. This discussion covers 16 poems from a total of 26 poems in this Chapter.

It is the Aqidah (belief) of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah that the Me’raj (journey) of Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was a physical bodily journey from the earth towards Allah Ta’ala (Verse 1, Surah Bani Israel).

Mufti Saheb explained some unique incidents that took place during the travel of Me’raj:

? Travel to Madinah Shareef

? Travel to Mount Sina (where Moosa Alayhis Salaam spoke to Allah Ta’ala)

? Travel to Madyan (where Shoaib Alayhis Salam resided and worked amongst his people)

? Travel to Bethlehem (where Isa Alayhis Salam was born).

? Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) meets the various prophets in the different heavens.

? The Baytul Ma’moor (the Ka’ba in the heaven) which is located directly above the Ka’ba.

? Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was shown Jannah and Jahannam.

Mufti Saheb then explained the relevant poems. See the two poems that is the highlight of this Chapter:

  1. All the prophets presented themselves before Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) just like how a slave presents himself in front of a master. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi

Wasallam) is ???? ???????? (Master of all Prophets).

  1. We should be a proud Ummah. We have such a pillar that can never collapse. This solid pillar refers to Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Allah Ta’ala called Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to the heavens due to him being the most honourable Rasul. We are the ummah of an honourable Rasul. Therefore, we become the most honourable Ummah in relation to all the previous Ummats.

Mufti Saheb explains two important lessons from the incident of Me’raj.

  1. Abdiyah – Servitude to Allah Ta’ala.
  2. Salaah – The greatest form of Abdiyah.

Mufti Saheb advised: Perform Salaah as though you are performing the last Salaah in your life

In conclusion, Mufti Saheb urges us to change the compass of our lives. He cites the example of the corona virus. Many people thought they had many years at their disposal before changing the focus of their lives. However, the virus proved otherwise. It took the lives of all ages. This is an eye opener for us. It is not an assumption; it is a reality. Present the best Salaah before Allah Ta’ala, connect to Allah T a’ala and submit to the will and decree of Allah Ta’ala.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 11

The Jihad of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam

Mufti Saheb resumed his discourses on Qaseedah Burdah. He gave an introduction to the 8th Chapter of Qaseedah Burdah titled, the Jihad of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.

Mufti Saheb addressed some misconceptions around the issue of Jihad. He then stated that while the Sahaba were oppressed and persecuted in Makka Mukarramah, Allah told them to forgive and overlook. They were not permitted to retaliate. In fact, they were advised to wake up at night and engage in tahajjud. Mufti Saheb stated that was Allahs way to nature the spirituality of the Sahaba. Spiritual strength is more important than physical strength.

The Sahaba saw the barakah of that spiritual training in Badr, Uhud, Ahzaab, Hunain and in the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah.

Mufti Saheb stated, how can we think of conquering the World when we haven’t conquered our nafs? How can we conquer the World, when we have not conquered how to deal with our anger, our evil eyes, backbiting and gossiping? We have not conquered our nafs in dealing with our wives, children and people in general. We have not conquered our nafs regarding Salaah and Deeni obligations.

Remember, the best jihad is to make Jihad against the Nafs and desires.

Mufti Saheb also referred to the issue of Islam spreading through the sword. He asked, which sword was hanging on Abubakar Siddique, Umar, Osman, Ali Radhiyallahu anhum and many others who accepted Islam in the midst of the oppression in Makka? In fact, they accepted Islam against the sword of kufr hanging over them. That was true acceptance from the heart. Which sword was hanging over Najashi Radiallahu Anhu in Abyssinia? He was a King and fully in charge but whole heartedly accepted Islam.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 12

Mufti Saheb commenced the program stating we are in the month of Rabiul Awwal, the month of the birth of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

We celebrate the birth of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam in every second, minute, hour and moments of our lives and it is not confined to Rabiul Awwal.

A true lover observes his beloved and imitate every aspect of his life.

Mufti Saheb then presented some very inspiring incidents of the love for Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.

He then gave a summarized version of the 8th Chapter of Qaseedah Burdah.

He concluded with the last 2 Chapters

Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam placed his Ummah in the secure fort of Deen like how a lion places its cubs in its den.

Our love for Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam should motivate us to consider the great sacrifices made by Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam and remain firm on Deen and the Sunnah of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 13

The Shafa’ah (Intercession) of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam

Mufti Saheb commenced his talk with the verse wherein Allah states

O you who believe, fear Allah and seek a Waseelah (Means) to Allah.

In this world of links and contacts, we adopt means to achieve our objectives.

We have contact with the Municipality to get water and lights. We have contact with different networks to get data.

The most effective way to attain the closeness to Allah and forgiveness of Allah is to seek the Waseela of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.

Mufti Saheb then explained the incident of a blind sahabi who’s eyes were restored when he made Dua through the Waseela of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.

Mufti Saheb then explained that Allamah Busairi was ill and lost all hope. He prepared poems in praises of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam to invoke the mercy of Allah.

Mufti Saheb then explained the relevant poems. He concluded with the Ahadith of Shafaah of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam on the day of Qiyamat. He advised that we should recite the dua of waseela after Adhaan and adopt the Sunnah of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam. That is the greatest Waseelah.

We make dua Allah grant us the Shafaah of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam on the day of Qiyamah. Ameen.

Qaseedah Burdah | PART 14

Discussion of Secrets and Needs

The 10th Chapter is the last Chapter of Qaseedah Burdah. It is the climax of the poems.

Allamah Busairi Rahimahullah was ill, he was paralyzed. In the state of hopelessness, he prepared these poems in the praises of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam to invoke the mercy and help of Allah.

The last Chapter is divided in to two parts.

In the first part, Allamah Busairi requests Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam to intercede for him on the day of Qiyamat.

In the second part, Allamah Busairi makes Du’aa to Allah to grant him Sabr.

He then concludes with requesting Allah to send the clouds of pounding and premanant rains of Durud and Salaam upon Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.

Allamah Busairi presented these poems to Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam in a dream. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam presented him with a shawl. The following morning, Allamah Busairi was cured. This is the Mu’jiza of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.

Mufti Saheb concluded by advising on how we should react to challenges of life.

Firstly, submit to Taqdeer. This is the greatest form of Ibadat.

He then advised on exerting oneself in Du’aa. Mufti Saheb then quoted many Ayaat of the Quran and Ahadith to jolt us and inspire us to engage in Du’aa. Finally, Mufti Saheb concluded with a heart rendering Du’aa.
