Question:
What happens when a person commits a severe sin and makes Taubah … but then repeats the sin again … with the thought of doing Taubah again?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-sal?mu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatull?hi wa-barak?tuh.
In principle, it is mandatory for a person to make Taubah after committing any type of sin major or minor.1 However, if a person has committed a severe sin (Gunnah-e-Kabeerah), then the following three conditions should be adhered for the validity of ones Taubah:2
1) He must refrain from committing the sin.
2) He must express remorse over committing the sin.
3) He must make a firm resolution never to return to that sin again.
Thus, if he commits the sin again he will get a sin and will have to make sincere Taubah.
One should not commit a sin with the intention of doing Taubah later. He may not get the Taufeeq to do Taubah again and be entrapped in the evil of sin for a long time. Allah forbid.
And Allah Ta’?la Knows Best
