The Qaseeda Burdah is divided into 10 chapters and 160 couplets. There are many virtues of reading the Qaseeda Burdah but the ultimate aim for one who recites it and understands it is to generate the love for Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam) in the heart and mind. Loving Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam) is the pathway to open the heart and a sign towards the divine love of Allah. It is through these poems we learn how to express our love for Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam) and how to translate that love in practical life.

Qaseeda Burdah | Chapter 1

Mufti Saheb commenced Qaseedah Burdah with an introduction to the poet, Mohammad bin Saeed. He then explained the position of poetry in Islam. Mufti Saheb then outlined the 10chapters in the Qaseedah. The first chapter is about Ishq (intense love) for Rasulullah Sallahu Alaihi Wasallam. A lover derives enjoyment with anything and everything of the beloved. Mufti Saheb then presented the virtues of Madina Shareef as our beloved Rasulullah is resting there. In the second session, the poet Allamah Busairi (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) presents a picture of the lover crying in the remembrance of the beloved. Mufti Saheb then presented the virtues of crying out of the remembrance of Allah. The third session was about the love for Rasulullah and how we should love Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam. Mufti presented some very inspiring incidents of the Sahabas love for Rasulullah Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam.

Qaseeda Burdah | Chapter 2

Allahmah Busairi (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) presents the parable of the Nafs to that of a grazing animal that has to be controlled from straying into illegal territory. Likewise the Nafs has to be constantly controlled and tamed from falling into the trap of Nafs and Shaytaan.Allamah Busairi (Rahmatullahi Alayh) highlights the sin of casting lustful glances among the various plots and tricks of the Nafs. The sins of the eyes deprive one from the Roohaniyyah (spirituality) of the heart.Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb cites various examples of those who became entrapped in the snares of Shaytaan and Nafs. Listen to the story of the Mu’azzin who became engulfed in the illicit love of a Christian girl and the incident of Hadhrat Sulayman Bin Yasar who protected himself from illicit love and the Fitnah of women. In concluding the second chapter, Allamah Busairi (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) paints a picture of a person who is helpless regarding his nafs and requires a spiritual guide. Mufti Saheb then expounded on the importance of having a spiritual guide. Mufti Saheb lamented the fact that people take baiat but do not reform themselves. That is not the problem of the concept of baiat,it is the problem with the persons attitude. There are three different types of Nafs:1. Nafs Mutma’innah 2. Nafs Lawwamah 3. Nafs Ammarah Bil SuAllamah Busairi (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) discusses the evils of the Nafs and complains about his Nafs and desires in old age in this chapter. He compares his Nafs to that of a rebellious horse tamed by the rains and a sucking child weaned of the mother’s milk. Our Nafs can only be tamed through constant Mujahadah (effort and sacrifice). We all have two enemies, viz. Shaytaan and Nafs. We will only be victorious as an Ummah if we control our Nafs through Mujahadah. In this discourse, Hadhrat Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb explains the importance of Mujahadah Nafs and protecting ourselves from Nafs and Shaytaan.

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 3)

Mufti Saheb commenced the third chapter of Qaseeda Burdah which is dedicated to the praises of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Mufti Saheb explained the difference between lives of Sahaba and us. The outstanding feature in their lives was sunnah and the outstanding vacuum in our lives is the absence of the sunnah.Mufti Saheb highlighted the importance of inculcating the Sunnah of being loving and kind in general and particular to our wives and business associates. The talk ended with encouraging people to study the personality of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Mufti Saheb stated that the first respondents to the Dawah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam were the illustrious Sahaba.Mufti Saheb explained in much detail the virtues of the Sahaba and condemned the mischief of those who try to remove the Sahaba from the equation of Islam. Furthermore those who do so are casting an allegation of the knowledge of Allah being deficient. A brilliant and thought provoking substantiation to prove this. Mufti Saheb then reverted to the lofty character of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and explained the reality of Akhlaaq. He concluded with presenting a competition between the Romans and Chinese.Allamah Busairi (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) likens Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam to the sun. Mufti Saheb pointed out to the 6 characteristics of the sun and explained how each one refers to Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.Allamah Busairi (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) praises Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and at times likens him to the sun,at times to the moon on the 14th night,at times to a flower and finally his patience runs out and he wants to meet Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and kiss him. If that is not possible at least we can kiss the sand of the Raudha Mubarak which exhumes the best of fragrance. Mufti Saheb presents how the Raudha is filled with unparalleled Noor. He ends with incidents of pious elders making Ziyarat of the Raudha Mubarak and their experiences.Mufti Saheb continues with the third chapter of the Qaseedah which is dedicated to the praises for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Allamah Busairi refers to the battle of Ahzaab where Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam had tied a stone on his soft skin to suppress his hunger. Mufti Saheb then advised that spiritual reformation is not automatic. Its a manual exercise. One cannot be automatically reformed.

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 4)

Mufti Saheb commenced the commentary of the fourth chapter of the Qaseeda Burdah ,the birth of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Mufti Saheb explained the various miracles that took place before and upon the birth of Rasulullah. He referred to the castle of Kisra, the Persian King and how it crumbled the night before the birth of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. One wall of the castle is still present today in Madaa’in.Mufti Saheb then briefly touched on the practice of celebrating birthdays. He also explained that we ought to celebrate the birth of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam in every moment of our lives with every Sunnah.

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 5)

The fifth chapter of Qaseeda Burda is about the miracles performed by Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam. Mufti Saheb referred to a tree that is still present in the Jordanian desert that gave shade to Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam when he was 12 years of age. A priest came out from his place of worship and held the hand of Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam and said,he is Rasul Rabbal Ameen. Allama Busairi Rahmatullah alayh refers to Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam’s Dua during drought and how the flood gates of the heaven opened up. Mufti Saheb then spoke about the cause of drought and the need to make sincere Istighfaar.

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 6)

The sixth chapter of Qaseedah Burda is about the nobility of the Quran. Mufti Saheb gave very inspirational examples of the impact of being attached to the Quran. The recitation of Qarie Basit Rahimahullah in the Russian Parliament causing atheist to cry shows the extent of spiritual touch of the Quran.Mufti Saheb presented many such incidents. In the second session Mufti Saheb elaborated on the extent of information in the Quran, the big bang theory, embryology, amoeba, steel being extra terrestrial etc.In the third session Mufti Saheb emphasized on tilawat of the Quran and it being a means of spiritual upliftment.

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 7)

The seventh chapter of the Qaseeda Burdah is about Me’raj. Mufti Saheb explained that the Meraj was in physical form and not in the dream. He then briefly explained the experiences of the travel to Masjid al Aqsa. All the poems express the lofty position Allah gave to Rasulullah Sallalahu alayhi wasallam and we have the honour of being from the most lofty Ummah. Mufti Saheb ended this chapter by emphasising on the importance of Salaah.

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 8)

The eight chapter of Qaseedah Burdah is on the Jihad of Rasulullah Sallalahu alayhi wasallam. Mufti Saheb addressed two issues. Islam did not spread with the sword. Which sword was hanging on those Sahaba who accepted Islam in the height of oppression. Which sword was hanging on Najashi, the African King who accepted Islam. Even today which sword hangs on all the reverts to Islam. Mufti Saheb then spoke out strongly against the irresponsible attitude of those who abuse Jihad. He stated Jihad requires discipline. When we gain internal victory of the heart then we will gain the external victory. Our failure in the warfield is because of irresponsible conduct and failure to conquer the heart. When we are victorious inside(in our hearts)we will be victorious outside. How can we do Jihad when we can’t wake up for Fajr Salaah. What Jihad can we do when we dont fight our nafs against disobeying our parents and throwing lustful glances. What jihad are we talking about when we are addicted to porn sites. First win the battle inside and inculcate spiritual strength.

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 9)

The ninth chapter of the Qaseeda Burdah is about seeking forgiveness from Allah and the intercession from Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam)

Qaseeda Burdah (Chapter 10)

Allamah Busairi (Rahmatullah alayh) prepared these poems as a means of invoking the mercy of Allah during his paralysis. After preparing these poems, he made the Ziyarah of Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam) in his dream in which he read these poems to Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam). Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam) was pleased with the poems and placed his hand on the body of Allama Busairi (Rahmatullah alayh) and presented him a shawl (burdah). When Allama Busairi woke up he was able to walk. He went to the town where he met the Qutb of the time, Allama Taajuddeen (Rahmatullah alayh) who requested Allamah Busairi to present some poetry in praises of Rasulullah Salallahu alayhi wasallam. Allamah Busairi stated he had prepared many poems in praises of Rasulullah Salallahu alayhi wasallam, which one does he want to hear? Allama Taajudeen stated the one that commences with –‘Amin Tazakkuri Jeeraanim bi zi Salami’. Allama Busairi was surprised as no one knew about these poems. Allama Taajuddeddn stated I was in the court of Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam) when you presented those poems to Rasulullah (Salallahu alayhi wasallam). Allamah Busairi then recited these poems to Allama Taajuddeen. From this point the Qaseedah spread and became popular.Since Allama Busairi meant to keep these poems a secret, it is called Munajaat. Mufti Saheb rounds up Qaseedah Burdah. He stated when a lover has secret discussions with his beloved, he expresses his love for the beloved until it reaches its climax in which he makes his special request. See how Allamah Busairi (Rahmatullah alayh) commences his expression of love and how he reaches the climax of love from the thoughts of the neighborhood of Madina Shareef, the breeze of Madina Shareef and the lightening from the mountains of Madina Shareef to the thought of kissing and smelling the fragrance of the Raudha Mubarak. Allama Busairi makes Dua to Allah to send abundant Salawaat to Rasulullah Salallahu alayhi wasallam, his family and the Sahaba Radhiallahu anhum in particular Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali Radiallahum Aameen.

Mufti Saheb ended the commentary and requested Hazrath Moulana Ahmad Chohan Saheb to make Dua. Moulana Sahebs Dua was very apt as he complained to Allah about our spiritual paralysis and made Dua for cure from spiritual ailments. Ameen.

Note: The Arabic version of the Qaseedah Burdah was rendered by Shaykh Yahya who is the Muadhin at Masjidus Saliheen, Sherwood. Allah blessed Shaykh Yahya with a beautiful voice as can be understood from listening to the Qaseedah. Mufti Saheb thanked Shaykh Yahya for his beautiful renditions and made Dua for him.
