Question:
Is there a Wazeefah to protect my eyes from sin?

Answer:

A Wazeefah alone is not sufficient to control lustful glances. If a person is hungry, any amount of Wazeefah will not satiate him. He has to make an effort to get food and eat it. It is human nature to be attracted to the opposite gender. When one has the feeling to see the opposite gender, bring up the courage and go against the Nafs and do not cast one’s gaze on the opposite gender. Allah says:

{قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ذَلِكَ أَزْكَى لَهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ} [النور: 30]
Translation: Say to the believers they should lower their gaze and guard their private parts, that is purer for them. Allah is Aware of the things they do. (An-Noor: 30)

{ وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ} [النور: 31]
Translation: And tell the believing women that they must lower their gazes and guard their private parts, and must not expose their adornment, except that which appears thereof. (An-Noor: 31)

The first step to go against one’s Nafs is understanding. If one understands the negative consequences of casting lustful glances on the opposite gender, he will do whatever it takes to safeguard himself from that. This is similar to when one understands the harm of poison, he will never ingest it. The consequences of lustful glances are worse than ingesting poison. It is death to one’s spirituality. Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam) advised:

إِنَّ النَّظْرَةَ سَهْمٌ مِنْ سِهَامِ إِبْلِيسَ مَسْمُومٌ، مَنْ تَرَكَهَا مَخَافَتِي أَبْدَلْتُهُ إِيمَانًا يَجِدُ حَلَاوَتَهُ فِي قَلْبِهِ

(المعجم الكبير للطبراني: 10362)
Translation: Indeed, lustful glances is a poisonous arrow form the arrow of Shaytaan. The person who avoids it out of fear of me, I will reward him with such Iman, the sweetness of which he will perceive in his heart. (Tabraani: 10362)

Once you train your eyes to exercise restraint, it will become easy for you to control your eyes. The Nafs will not have an urge to see and satiate itself. Never feed the Nafs with its desires. The Nafs will never be satiated. The Nafs is like a big eater who never gets satiated with eating any amount of food. The only way to discipline the Nafs is to go against the Nafs and its desires.

‘Alamah busayri (Rahimahullah) mentions in his treatise, Qasidah Burdah:

إِنَّ الطعـامَ يُقوِّي شــهوةَ النَّهِمِ
حُبِّ الرّضَاع وَإِنْ تَفْطِمْهُ يَنفَطِــمِ فـلا تَرُمْ بالمعاصي كَسْـرَ شـهوَتهَ
والنَّفسُ كَالطّفلِ إِنْ تُهمِلْه ُشَبَّ عَلَى
إِنَّ الهوى مـا تَـوَلَّى يُصْمِ أو يَصِمِ فاصْرِف هواهــا وحاذِر أَن تُوَلِّيَهُ

Translation:

• Do not intend breaking the desires of the Nafs through committing sins. Verily food strengthens the desires of a big eater.
• The Nafs is like a child, if you leave it, it will become a youth, while enjoying breastfeeding, and if you wean it, it will be weaned.
• So, desist/discard the desires of the Nafs and beware that the desires do not overpower the Nafs. Verily when carnal desires overpower, it will either kill or it will create a defect.
• Remember, we are slaves of our desires. If we want to be the slaves of Allah, make our Nafs our slaves. We should control our Nafs like how a master controls his slave.

The following Du’a is beneficial to read to assist us in the process of controlling the Nafs:

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ أَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ، وَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ
إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي تَكِلْنِي إِلَى ضَعْفٍ وَعَوْرَةٍ وَذَنْبٍ وَخَطِيئَةٍ

Translation: O Ever Living One, O Eternal One, by Your mercy I call on You to set right all my affairs. Do not place me in charge of my Nafs even for the blinking of an eye (i.e. a moment). O Allah, if You hand me over to my Nafs, then You will be handing me over to weakness, sin, exposure and error. (Shu’bul Iman: 746)

One effective way of controlling one’s gaze is Allah consciousness. Allah is As-Samee’ (The All hearing) and Al-Baseer (The All Seeing).

See the following verses:

{أَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَى} [العلق: 14]
Translation: Does he not know that Allah is watching? (Al-‘Alaq:14)

{يَعْلَمُ خَائِنَةَ الْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِي الصُّدُورُ} [غافر: 19]
Translation: Allah knows the fraud of the eyes (the secret lustful glances that people make) and what the hearts conceal. (Ghaafir: 19)

When you are conscious that Allah is seeing you, how can you engage in the Zina of the eyes in front of Allah, especially when Allah created the eyes as a bounty for you? How can we use the bounties of Allah against Allah? That is most ungrateful.

In order to understand the above, imagine there is a person all alone in a room. There is no one with him. However, there is a camera in front of him. In another room, there are people watching him on a large screen. A good-looking male/female walks by. Would the person cast a lustful glance on her knowing that every move of his is being caught on camera and relayed? In the same way, Allah is aware of every move. How shameful is it for one to openly commit Zina of the eyes in the presence of Allah?

One should try his best to control the gaze. Avoid places where one finds it difficult to control one’s gaze, for example, shopping malls, mixed gatherings. Also, avoiding reading and seeing immoral content. Remember, prevention is better than cure. There is a famous saying that ‘true prevention is not waiting for bad things to happen, rather it is preventing things from happening in the first place.’

باب مَنِ اشْتَرَى بِالدَّيْنِ وَلَيْسَ عِنْدَهُ ثَمَنُهُ، أَوْ لَيْسَ بِحَضْرَتِهِ

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ غَزَوْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ كَيْفَ تَرَى بَعِيرَكَ أَتَبِيعُنِيهِ ‏”‏‏.‏ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ‏.‏ فَبِعْتُهُ إِيَّاهُ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ غَدَوْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِالْبَعِيرِ، فَأَعْطَانِي ثَمَنَهُ‏.‏

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: While I was in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) in one of his Ghazawat, he asked, “What is wrong with your camel? Will you sell it?” I replied in the affirmative and sold it to him. When he reached Medina, I took the camel to him in the morning and he paid me its price.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ الصَّعْبَ بْنَ جَثَّامَةَ، قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ لاَ حِمَى إِلاَّ لِلَّهِ وَلِرَسُولِهِ ‏”‏‏.‏ وَقَالَ بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم حَمَى النَّقِيعَ، وَأَنَّ عُمَرَ حَمَى السَّرَفَ وَالرَّبَذَةَ‏.‏

Narrated As-Sab bin Jath-thama: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, No Hima except for Allah and His Apostle. We have been told that Allah’s Apostle made a place called An-Naqi’ as Hima, and `Umar made Ash-Sharaf and Ar-Rabadha Hima (for grazing the animals of Zakat).

بَابٌ في الشُّرْبِ وَقَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: {وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ أَفَلاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ}
وَقَوْلِهِ جَلَّ ذِكْرُهُ: {أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُونَ لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلاَ تَشْكُرُونَ}. الأُجَاجُ الْمُرُّ، الْمُزْنُ السَّحَابُ.

Chapter: Giving water in charity, or as a gift, and whoever thinks that giving water in charity, or as a gift or by way of a testament is permissible, whether it is divided or not

بَابٌ في الشُّرْبِ، وَمَنْ رَأَى صَدَقَةَ الْمَاءِ وَهِبَتَهُ وَوَصِيَّتَهُ جَائِزَةً، مَقْسُومًا كَانَ أَوْ غَيْرَ مَقْسُومٍ
وَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ يَشْتَرِي بِئْرَ رُومَةَ فَيَكُونُ دَلْوُهُ فِيهَا كَدِلاَءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ». فَاشْتَرَاهَا عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ.

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو غَسَّانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِقَدَحٍ فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ، وَعَنْ يَمِينِهِ غُلاَمٌ أَصْغَرُ الْقَوْمِ، وَالأَشْيَاخُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ يَا غُلاَمُ أَتَأْذَنُ لِي أَنْ أُعْطِيَهُ الأَشْيَاخَ ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ مَا كُنْتُ لأُوثِرَ بِفَضْلِي مِنْكَ أَحَدًا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ‏.‏ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ‏.‏

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d: A tumbler (full of milk or water) was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) who drank from it, while on his right side there was sitting a boy who was the youngest of those who were present and on his left side there were old men. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked, “O boy, will you allow me to give it (i.e. the rest of the drink) to the old men?” The boy said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! I will not give preference to anyone over me to drink the rest of it from which you have drunk.” So, the Prophet (ﷺ) gave it to him.

How does one attain intense love for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam?

 

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Having love for Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) is an integral part of Imaan. Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) has mentions in a Hadith:

عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لاَ يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ، حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ وَالِدِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
صحيح البخاري(1/ 12)

Translation: “It was narrated that Anas RadiyAllahu Anhu said: Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child and all the people.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol 1 Page12)

The swiftest way to attain intense love for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam is by inculcating every single Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam in one’s life. True love for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam can only be attained by adopting the Sunnah lifestyle of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

One may also recite abundant Durood Shareef upon Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, as this also creates the love of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam in one’s heart.
